Thanksgiving is about gathering – and Chattanooga might be the easiest place in the Southeast to do it. It’s roughly two hours from Atlanta, Nashville, Knoxville and Birmingham, so everyone can meet in the middle. And by Thanksgiving week, the city is just beginning to light up for the holidays.
Here’s a long-weekend plan that mixes tradition, a little adventure and plenty of time around the table.
Wednesday: Arrive and Settle In
Beat the holiday traffic, drop your bags and take an evening stroll across the Walnut Street Bridge, one of the longest pedestrian bridges in the country, to the North Shore and Coolidge Park. Grab dinner downtown, then call it an early night – tomorrow is a big day.
Thursday: The Feast
Two great options. Many downtown restaurants and hotels serve Thanksgiving dinner, but they fill up, so book weeks ahead. Or skip the reservation entirely and cook together. Our Chattanooga residence has a fully equipped kitchen and room for the whole crew, so you can host Thanksgiving without hosting the cleanup at your own house.
After dinner, drive up Lookout Mountain to Rock City’s Enchanted Garden of Lights (Nov. 13 – Dec. 31, 2026), one of the region’s favorite holiday traditions. Walking the lit trails along the mountain is the perfect way to work off the pie. (Check Rock City’s holiday-week hours before you go.)
Friday: Lookout Mountain and Holiday Kickoffs
Holidays at Ruby Falls begin Nov. 27, 2026 – the day after Thanksgiving – and run through Dec. 24. Deep inside the mountain, the cave stays a comfortable 60 degrees year-round, so no one needs a heavy coat. Pair it with the historic Incline Railway for a classic Chattanooga day on the mountain.
Back downtown, the Tennessee Aquarium is a can’t-miss for all ages, and in recent years it has decked out both buildings with holiday displays. It’s an easy walk from our place.
Saturday: Run It Off, Then Shop Small
Lace up for the Chattanooga Hungry Turkey on Saturday, Nov. 28, 2026, starting at 8 a.m. from 400 River Street. Choose a 5K run or walk, a 10K or a half marathon. Every finisher gets a medal, and there’s a donut waiting at the end.
Then spend the afternoon on Small Business Saturday. Browse the boutiques on the North Shore, the shops and galleries of the Southside and Main Street, and the Bluff View Art District overlooking the river. You’ll find gifts with far more personality than anything at the mall.
Sunday: One More Look
Linger over brunch, take one last walk along the riverfront and head home before the traffic builds. If you’re staying through December, ice skating, holiday lights and the city’s lantern and light displays are just getting started.
Gather With Us
Our two-bedroom, two-bath Chattanooga residence is downtown, designed for groups who want to be together without being on top of each other. Put on a record in The Groove, set up the game in The Tailgate, and let the long weekend unfold.
Thanksgiving weekend is one of our busiest.
