Summer in Chattanooga is all about the river. But when the air turns crisp, the Scenic City shows off a different side – mountain overlooks blazing with color, cozy museums, lights on Lookout Mountain and some of the best patio-with-a-heater dining in the South.
Chase the Fall Color

Mid-October through early November is typically peak leaf season in Chattanooga, with the higher elevations turning first. Our favorite places to see it:
- Sunset Rock on Lookout Mountain – come for sunset, stay for the view of the valley in full color.
- Point Park – sweeping views over the Tennessee River, with Civil War history around every corner.
- Raccoon Mountain’s Laurel Point Loop – overlooks a remote stretch of the Tennessee River Gorge.
- Cloudland Canyon State Park – about 30 miles away in Georgia, with dramatic canyon rim views from the West Rim Loop.
- Walnut Street Bridge – for a city-meets-mountains photo without leaving downtown.
Go Underground at Ruby Falls
Here’s a secret weapon for cold days: inside Lookout Mountain, Ruby Falls stays a comfortable 60 degrees year-round. Winter is actually a great time to go. The crowds are smaller, and winter rain and snowmelt feed the underground waterfall, making it more powerful. Afterward, warm up by the stone fireplace in the historic 1929 castle.
Ride the Incline

The Lookout Mountain Incline Railway has been climbing the mountain for well over a century, and the view from the top is even better when the trees are bare or blazing. Combine it with Point Park for an easy half day.
Museums and Indoor Favorites
- Tennessee Aquarium – two buildings, one river-to-ocean journey, right downtown.
- Hunter Museum of American Art – a striking building perched on the bluff, with one of the best views in the city.
- Bluff View Art District – galleries, a sculpture garden and coffee, all overlooking the river.
- The Southside and Main Street – breweries, local restaurants and live music that keep the evenings lively all year.
Holiday Lights Season
From mid-November through New Year’s Eve, Chattanooga glows. Rock City’s Enchanted Garden of Lights runs Nov. 13 – Dec. 31, 2026, and Holidays at Ruby Falls runs Nov. 27 – Dec. 24. In recent years, the city has added outdoor ice skating, the Chattanooga Zoo’s Asian Lantern Festival and holiday displays at the Tennessee Aquarium. Check each for 2026 dates.
Why Come in the Off-Season?
Fewer crowds, easier reservations and a city that’s still buzzing. Cool-weather Chattanooga is perfect for a couples’ getaway, a girlfriends’ weekend or a few productive days of remote work with a mountain view at the end of the day.
Your Home Base
Our downtown Chattanooga residence (two bedrooms, two baths) is close to the Aquarium, the riverfront and the Southside. Settle into The Recharge after a day on the mountain, or keep your inbox in check at The Workaround before heading out to dinner.
Fall and winter dates are open now.
